I. INTRODUCTION

Background of Siemen's, Inc.

Siemens, Inc. was incorporated on May 18, 1992 for the purpose of marketing electronic and electrical products, public and private telecommunication systems, their apparatus, peripherals, enhancements, and all related devices as well as the repair and maintenance thereof. On January 15, 1994, Siemens, Inc. became a 100% subsidiary of Siemens AG.

In 1992 the capital used was P200,000,000.00 and as of September 1997 their revenue grew up to 2 Billion pesos. Siemens, Inc. is associated to ETSI Technologies, Inc.; Siemens Medical Systems, Inc. (SMSI); Siemens Power Operations, Inc.; Siemens Building Technologies, Inc.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

What is the Intranet? What is role of the technology, Private Key Infrastructure (PKI), used by Siemens Company, in securing confidential data found in the Intranet from unauthorized users?


III. OBJECTIVE

The main objective of this paper is to discuss briefly what the Intranet is about. Secondly, to show the role of the technology, Private Key Infrastructure (PKI), used by Siemens Company in securing confidential data found in the Intranet from unauthorized users. In addition to this, this paper aims to discuss briefly another innovation, called the Key Card which is presently being worked on, to further secure the authorized access to the intranet. It is said that the key card goes hand in hand with the PKI technology.


IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The paper will scope on the innovation used by Siemens to secure the confidential information on the Intranet. Moreover, the paper aims to cover briefly what the Intranet is about and briefly discuss the latest innovation their working on at present. Nothing related to the technical aspects or technical difficulties that concern the technology will be found in the report. Also, there will be no detailed discussion on the data content of Siemens, Inc. Intranet for the content was said to be confidential for top management of the company only.
